Empowering a software communications leader to master growth in the cloud
Overview
A leading provider of client-centered software solutions for a range of industries faced several critical challenges. Two of its foundational platforms required strategic modernization to improve performance, scalability, and cloud integration, among other issues.
Outcomes that matter
After a period of due diligence, the company recognized that RapidScale offered the modernization solution, roadmap, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) expertise they needed to overcome the company’s challenges. Above all, the company recognized that AWS has helped thousands of organizations migrate to the cloud while modernizing their infrastructure and applications. From lower costs to increased speed, migrating and modernizing with AWS would help the company transform how they work and innovate with improvements in productivity, business agility, and operational resilience.

Challenge
This company is a trusted provider of customer-tailored software, technology, and communication solutions for a range of businesses via two cornerstone platforms. One platform is a cloud-based, full-scale restaurant point of sale (POS) system that uses server-held tablets to improve the restaurant experience for customers, employees, and restaurant owners.
They have another point of sale (POS) software platform for the rent-to-own (RTO) industry that records essential business data in real-time to help them track, sell, rent, and take payments on inventory and provide access anywhere, anytime from any internet-connected device. These applications are vital to this company’s customer base but were in deep need of strategic modernization to remain competitive and operationally efficient.
The modernization drive was triggered by several critical challenges. The company had a notable skills gap in modern software development, cloud architecture, and SaaS best practices. One POS system needed a full rewrite or an architectural audit to improve its performance and scalability. Their second POS platform lacked a clear path to integrate into a modern cloud infrastructure. The company had clear goals to develop an actionable modernization roadmap for both platforms and align technical priorities with customer needs—but no realistic modernization roadmap or tactical path forward.
The company also wanted to migrate its second POS platform from a distributed on-premise environment to a centralized cloud-based SaaS model and transition its first POS system to a hybrid cloud architecture to maintain offline functionality while scaling. Most importantly, the company wanted to achieve all this without disrupting current users or business continuity.
The challenge
Painfully, a prior modernization partner left this company with an unrealistic roadmap and no tactical path forward. Further, the company had mission-critical goals it wanted to achieve, which included:
- Aligning technical priorities with real-world customer needs
- Gaining benefits of cloud infrastructure
- Modernizing without disrupting internal operations or customers' reliance on this company's decisions.
To achieve these goals, resolve ongoing issues, and more, this company partnered with leading modernization specialists from RapidScale.
The solution
RapidScale deployed a phased app modernization strategy rooted in agile methodologies and AWS-native technologies. RapidScale established a robust Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline via AWS to support agile development to enable the company to deploy new features quickly and confidently.
-
Cloud migration and modernization - RapidScale re-platformed the company’s POS system into a hybrid model leveraging Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) for consistent deployment across on-premises and AWS cloud with Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL as the backend.
-
Second POS application - RapidScale introduced a bridge architecture based on microservices to allow gradual, non-disruptive migration from COBOL while preserving data integrity.
-
AWS optimization - RapidScale moved critical workloads away from expensive legacy hosting platforms to AWS, significantly reducing infrastructure costs while improving reliability.
-
AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) - This delivered a comprehensive and proven cloud migration program based on AWS experience migrating thousands of customers to the cloud. MAP uses an established three-phase framework (Assess, Mobilize, and Migrate & Modernize) to help achieve migration goals in a timely fashion while reducing risk and offsetting initial costs.
